A New Medicare Rule That Could Save You Thousands
If you’re a Medicare beneficiary, there’s important news you should know:
Beginning in 2025, your total out-of-pocket costs for prescription medications under Medicare Part D will be capped at $2,000 per year.
This change is part of the Inflation Reduction Act and is expected to make a big difference for patients across the country—especially those who take expensive medications for chronic conditions.
What This Means for You
If you have high prescription drug costs—for example, cancer therapies, hormone blockers, or long-term medications for overactive bladder or prostate enlargement (BPH)—you could save hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year.
Previously, some Medicare patients paid $5,000 or more per year in out-of-pocket drug costs. In 2025 and beyond, once you’ve spent $2,000 in total for the year, your additional prescription drug costs will be $0 for the rest of the year.
Who Benefits Most?
This is especially good news for patients who:

Take medications for advanced prostate cancer (such as Xtandi®, Erleada®, or Orgovyx®)

Use long-term BPH treatments or bladder medications

Rely on specialty drugs or branded medications

You don’t need to do anything to enroll in this benefit—it will automatically apply to Medicare Part D plans starting in 2025.
